Digging Up Old Gems

These days it seems necessary for Hollywood to try something that has already been done, and I'm not talking about the typical story similarities that are seen all over the film industry, I'm talking about literally redoing the old things that worked.  Remakes and unwanted sequels are the backbone of todays film industry.  Whether it is the 2007 Rob Zombie Halloween remakes or f**king Dumb and Dumber To, it is this totally unneeded rehashing of old things when there is plenty of new things that can still work.
To start with remakes I will use Halloween as my primarily example.  There is absolutely nothing wrong with John Carpenter's Halloween film, it is 36 years old for crying out loud and it holds up better than the crap that is 7 years old.  It is a classic, why would you redo it but simultaneously make it worse.  The '78 film had some heart behind it and some true horror, but the '07 movie is just a jump-scare-slasher flick that just frustrates me that it got made.  Some movies just do not need to be made and if remaking classics and screwing them up is the best they got, then I really need to get a job in Hollywood cause I got a couple of ideas floating around in this old noggin that might be worth something.
Secondly let's look at sequels.  I have nine words for you that sum up my opinion on making sequels to long since dead movies/franchises ... Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.  A franchise that was dead almost 20 years is reignited, everyone is thrilled thinking this will be what sets Indiana Jones apart from so many other franchises, alas it destroyed any real hope of there being any other movies that can replicate the same successful formula Indy had, hell if the Indy guys couldn't redo it no one could.  No I see they are making a Dumb and Dumber sequel, WTF.  Seriously that movie is a '90's gem but what executive thinks this can work when it is no longer the '90's.  The first movie is 20 years old, why are they doing this now.  I find the problem with these usually comes when the same filmmakers are working on the "long awaited" sequels as those who did the original, they try to catch lightning in a bottle twice, twenty years apart and it just can't work when we are not in the same time period with the same influences.  Now there is this upcoming Jurassic World that I really want to be good but I just feel that I am hoping against hope.  But here's to hoping.

Welcome

Welcome to, The Post Credits, the official blog of the Movie Fans Podcast Network. This is going to be the home of anything movie related that I feel like talking about, or it could be related to developments in the podcast. This won't be updated on a schedule but will be updated frequently. I will be one of the primary writers here, but Brian and younger Brendan may chime in a bit here and there. So enjoy.
